About the studio

From a rose engine to a studio.

For me, designing a dial always felt like the end game of watch tinkering.

Discovering the romance and history of rose engines drew me toward something I’d never imagined I could do. Here was a kind of art that made sense to me: art made through geometry, design, and pattern.

Eventually, I bought a rose engine. It taught me two things. It really was as incredible as it seemed. And getting it right was going to take a lot of practice.

Practice takes time and materials. I wanted a way to explore an idea before committing it to metal—to picture a dial, try custom patterns, and make more considered choices when I returned to the machine. So I started building an app.

Once I had a working prototype, the possibilities began to grow. What about color? What about people who didn’t have a rose engine, but did have a CNC machine or a laser?

Those questions widened the idea behind Guilloche Dial Studio: a place to explore dial designs, discover possibilities, and develop something of your own.

Guilloche Dial Studio grew out of my own watchmaking experiments. AI helped me turn an idea into working software, and I want to share what came from that.
